John and the Sisters - JOHN and the SISTERS - NorthernBlues Music

Who are John and the Sisters?
John is long time local Bluesman, vocalist John Dickie and the Sisters are guitarist Kevin Breit and his Sisters Euclid band. John is quite well known through his solo performances and his singing with bands like Mondo Combo, the Prima Donnas and the Cameo Blues Band. Kevin Breit has recently acquired world recognition with his playing and touring with Cassandra Wilson and Norah Jones. Many of us were treated to the bands self titled CD release party at the Rivoli on Tuesday April 20th. The room was packed to hear them play the tracks on this very interesting recording produced by Kevin Breit. Though the CD was introduced as a Blues album, it actually covers various musical styles with an edge. John’s voice has never sounded better and Kevin’s guitar lines were really in the pocket.

The other Sisters, Ian Desouza on bass, Rob Gusevs on keyboards and Gary Taylor on drums, plus a few special guests rounded out the right rhythm for both John and Kevin to do their thing. Kevin and/or John were involved someway in the writing of the seventeen tracks. The CD kicks off with a raunchy funky tune called “Too Damn Big” with John and Kevin both wailin’ away. A rollin’ groove flows through “Only One”, with Suzie Vinnick, takin’ the vocal on the break. The mood slows down a bit on the bluesy “Big Bomb”. I like the lyrics of the slow song “Gun” with Kevin’s slide guitar. “L.A” gets funky again with some nice chorus singing. Definitely my favourite choice of the tracks is the rockin’ and rollin’ R&B number “Pralene” with Kevin workin’ the slide again. A little soul and gospel are felt in the slow ballad “Faithful”. You get another bit of the feel for the Blues and R&B on “A Better Way”. A smooth ride is handed out on “Money Changes Everything”. There’s a New Orleans, funk and pop beat in the tune “Good Day”. Another one I really like, of course it has Kevin slidin’, and it rocks, is “Penguin Walk”. John gets to blow some harp on “Love To Stay, Gotta Go” which is both haunting and bluesy. Like I said this is a very interesting CD. It’s different, and I guess that’s why I like it. Now you know whoJOHN and the SISTERSare and what they’re all about.
