For years
Jeff Healey well known worldwide for his Rock/Blues tours,
recordings, cover exposures and write-ups in various guitar
magazines has made quite a change of musical direction with
this release on his new independent record label HealeyOphonic.
Knowing Jeff for a number of years, listening to his radio
shows, visiting him at his home and seeing his incredible
collection of 78-rpm records I believed it was only a matter
of time before he got 'The Jazz Wizards' together and took
that step into the "Adventures In Jazzland". Jeff's
die-hard fans may not dig this latest recording into
traditional Jazz, but it is from his sincere interest in this
music genre and most importantly, from his heart.
Personally I
really got into this album, it's Bluesy, it's Jazzy and the
over all tempo of the tunes really swings. With Jeff on
vocals, trumpet, trombone, guitar and his band very talented
Jazz musicians, including Jesse Barksdale (guitar), Reide
Kaiser (piano), Dan Levinson (reeds), Colon Bray (upright
bass) and Gary Scriven (Drums), to name a few, gave me a
musical pleasure hitting my eardrums.
There are a number of
hot instruments on the recording like "Bugle Call
Rag", "I Never Knew What A Gal Could Do",
"Keep Smiling At Trouble", "Poor
Butterfly" and "Little Buttercup" with a series
of solos from band members and Jeff paying his various
instruments.
Yes, I do have some favourites on the CD. "My
Honey's Lovin' Arms" with Jeff singin' and layin' down a
tasty guitar solo. The movin' versions of "Three Little
Words" and "My Blackbirds Are Bluebirds Now",
"You're Driving Me Crazy" which feature Jeff on
vocal, guitar and/or trumpet. A number of other tunes, "Emaline",
"If I Had You", "Someday Sweetheart",
"Mine-All Mine", "You Brought A New Kind Of
Love To Me" and "Indiana" will keep your
foot-a-tappin'.
Jeff thanks for keeping this inspirational and
historical music alive and in our hearts.
If you like
traditional jazz or just great timeless music in general, let
Jeff and his band take you on a trip into the world of
"Adventures In Jazzland"
