Chicago
bluesman Nick Moss and his band, The Flip Tops, must live a
different musical world than most Blues artists, and for that fact
alone I say, Thank You! When
I put Nick’s latest album, “Sadie Mae” on the player I was
taken back to an era of single play records. Nick sings, plays his
guitar, writes tunes and puts it all down like a time bomb!
Holy late nite jukebox, this band plays the Blues! Nick on twelve
lyrics, vocals, lead and rhythm guitar, harp on a track and Gerry
Hundt, harmonica, rhythm and lead guitar, plus Bob Welsh on
keyboards; Dave Wood: bass and Victor Spann: drums, work up a Blues
storm.
“Sadie Mae”, is a title of a few well-known Blues songs, but it
is also the name Nick gave to his first-born daughter. Some of my
favourite tracks by Nick are the title tune, an
instrumental called “Ridin’
At The Ranch”, the slow Blues of “One–Eyed Jack” with
Nick’s raunchy slide guitar, the rockin’ “Money I Make” and
the close out slide instrumental “Gone Hoggin’”.
Nick and the band also give justice to a few other Chicago
compositions like Earl Hooker’s “You Got To Lose”, Jimmy
Rogers’ “Crazy Woman Blues” and Lefty Dizz’s “If I could
Get My Hands On You”.
Jeez,
I even like the feel of the compact disc in my hand, as it looks
like a mini version of the vinyl records in my collection!
If you understand even a little bit of what I’m tryin’ to say
about Nick Moss & The Flip Tops and the “Sadie Mae” album, I
just hope you pick it up and hopefully grab his other releases, To
quote Nick from the liner notes, “I don’t try to re-invent the
wheel, I’m not trying to take blues to the next level or in a
different direction, I’m just trying to preserve what was handed
down to me.” I’ll say, this man knows how to do it right! Nick
Moss is the Blues! Eddy

Out of a six-pack of brew review, I would give it a full case, but
grab an extra one if ya dig those straight ahead Blues!
