Syreeta Neal

Music
Syreeta Neal is a new young diva on the music scene. She
is the daughter of the famous Blues artist Kenny Neal.
I just caught the tail end of her CD release party at Healey’s
on Wednesday April 15 and could tell instantly that this woman
has what it takes to make it, beauty, the stage presents and
the vocal “pipes” to even take over a packed room. Syreeta
has taken a totally different approach in music than her
father. Her debut CD “Stand Tall” on the Curve Music
label mixes a variety of musical styles, She also co-wrote
nine of the thirteen tracks on the album and many of the
lyrics in the songs are meaningful and intense. |

Some of my
favourite tunes are the soulful “In My Life (Fly)”, the
slow ballads ”The Lonely In Me” and “Melody Maker",
the funky “Fire & Flood”, “Ain’t A Big Deal” and
“Trouble”, the groove on “Follow You” and the
title track, “Stand Tall” is so very beautiful. I
usually only do reviews on Blues related CDs, but I have to
express that it was a delight to listen to Syreeta Neal’s new
recording, her words, her voice gave me a much needed feeling
in my soul. Eddy B

Marshall
Lawrence -
Where’s The Party?
- Indie
Marshall Lawrence,
known as Edmonton’s “Doctor of the Blues” has finally
released his new CD called “Where’s The Party?” and
that is an exact description of what this recording is all
about, a “Party Time”. Although Marshall’s voice is not
the strongest I’ve ever heard, as I went through the tracks on
the CD I realized that his voice actually hangs in the right
groove for the music he has recorded. Horns and Marshall
playin’ the mandolin start the album with Big Bill
Broonzy’s classic “Key To The Highway”. Next up is
Albert King’s famous “Ill Play The Blues For You”
with Marshall wailin’ away on the electric guitar with backup
vocals. |

“Pour me Some
Whiskey” is one of the best tracks and is written by Mr.
Lawrence. Howlin’ Wolf’s “How Many More Years” haunts
your body. Things really start to rock on Junior Wells’ “Snatch
It Back And Hold It”. The mood slows down a bit on Tampa
Red’s “But I Forgive You Blues”. A New Orleans
traditional tune recorded by the who’s who of the Blues, which has
been recorded many times over the years, “There’s Something On
Your Mind” and Marshall gives the tune once again some justice.
“Tain’t Nobody’s Biz-ness” would make Jimmy Witherspoon
proud. Willie Dixon’s “I Just Want To Make Love To You”
is a high tempo version with some honkin’ sax. The album ends with
Marshall Lawrence’s rockin’ composition “Hey Brother”, and
what a high note to finish off a “Party Time” CD.Yes,
I really like “Where’s The Party?”.
